Shrinkflation: How our Convenient Height brand customers win the Shrinkflation battle

Upsizing is rare but our Convenient Height Company products (specifically tall toilets) are upsizing. Learn how our customers are winning the shrinkflation battle
shrinkflation is the process of items shrinking in size or quantity, or even sometimes reformulating or reducing quality, while their prices remain the same
In Economics, shrinkflation is the process of items shrinking in size or quantity, or even sometimes reformulating or reducing quality, while their prices remain the same.

All we have been hearing in the news lately is that shrinkflation accelerates globally as manufacturers quietly (or openly) shrink package sizes. Consumers sensitivity to ‘Shrinkflation’ is leading them to switch food & beverage brands. If you are a big sweet tooth you have been grinding your teeth witnessing how much less candy there is in otherwise same size packaging. Or orange juice – we now get 25% less OJ for the same price. Our groceries are becoming more expensive. What people may not have noticed is they’re getting smaller too. By reducing the size of, say, a jar of jam, a food company can effectively charge more for it while avoiding a sticker price hike that would dent sales. It’s not a new tactic, but “shrinkflation” is back in vogue now the industry is grappling with soaring costs of everything from wheat to vegetable oils and energy.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE that this article is posted not to criticize other or any companies, businesses or the government. Convenient Height Company is part of the world and U.S. economy, so this article is not to make light of the economic challenges the United States is facing. The goal of this post is to highlight that the phenomenon of shrinkflation is not at all affecting our Convenient Height brand customers. And while upsizing is rare, our Convenient Height Company products (specifically tall toilets) are upsizing. Today our customers are winning the shrinkflation battle, one quarter of an inch at a time.

Shrinkflation phenomenon is where products are shrinking in size, weight or quantity as prices remain the same or even increase
Shrinkflation is a phenomenon in economy where products are shrinking in size, weight or quantity as prices remain the same or even increase.

But let’s start at the beginning and we can see that in the Wikipedia the definition of shrinkflation is as follows: in economics, shrinkflation is the process of items shrinking in size or quantity, or even sometimes reformulating or reducing quality, while their prices remain the same. The word is a portmanteau of the words shrink and inflation. First usage of the term “shrinkflation” with its current meaning has been attributed to the economist Pippa Malmgren, though the same term had been used earlier by historian Brian Domitrovic to refer to an economy shrinking while also suffering high inflation.

Shrinkflation news companies increase their operating margin and profitability by reducing costs
Shrinkflation? Hypothetically, one egg instead of 5 is an alternative to raising prices in line with inflation

Without explicitly using the term Shrinkflation, macroeconomist Vivek Moorthy much earlier documented and analyzed the shrinkage effect of inflation – to cope with inflation, fast moving consumer goods firms would often resort to shrinking the product size to avoid raising prices.

Shrinkflation allows companies to increase their operating margin and profitability by reducing costs whilst maintaining sales volume, and is often used as an alternative to raising prices in line with inflation. Consumers’ sensitivity towards groceries’ persistent price increases means they’re more attuned to “shrinkflation,” which is likely further driven by how much they’ve heard about the term. Majority of the U.S. adults say that shrinking packages and portion sizes are sending them to alternative brands. Even the President called on companies to put a stop to shrinkflation. He said: “When buying snacks for the game, you might have noticed one thing: Sports drink bottles are smaller, a bag of chips has fewer chips, but they’re still charging you just as much.” (see video of this in a tweet shown below)

Yes, it is a a hard to watch trend where the majority of U.S. adults see shrinking packages and portions. Products are shrinking in size, weight or quantity as prices remain the same or even increase — a phenomenon that’s particularly prevalent in the grocery category. Currently, levels of awareness about shrinkflation correspond to levels of concern: a majority of U.S. adults have seen, read or heard something about shrinkflation.

Upsizing is rare, but Convenient Height tall toilets are upsizing

#2 We supply a free slow-closing toilet seat with each Model S tall toilet. And this adds another solid inch to the total value of height and convenience, reaching 21-3/4 inches from the floor to the top of the toilet seat! Comparing this to the toilet at home illustrates the value offered, and convenience gained with the Convenient Height tall toilet.

#3: We are the only manufacturer to make toilets where every unit sold has not one but two flush options!. This is the courtesy of our New-Deneration dual flush system.
